"Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit,
but with humility regard one another
as more important than yourselves."
"...it is God who is at work in you,
both to will and to work for His good pleasure."
"Do all things without grumbling or disputing;"
How I identify selfishness/empty conceit (when I consider myself more important than others) in myself:
- I'm annoyed when I've sacrificed time over and over again to help someone and he/she acts like it's my job to help them.
- I'm annoyed when I think people think I'm lazy.
- I'm annoyed when I have my day all "perfectly" planned out and along comes an opportunity to serve a brother instead of fulfilling my schedule.
What is really happening:
- I'm assuming time is mine. I'm assuming it isn't my job to help people and regard them as more important than myself.
- I'm assuming that I have something to be prideful about when I'm willing to and able to help people.
- I'm grumbling just like the world instead of rejoicing at opportunity; I'm fueled by pride and praise rather than by God's example of love which He extends to me despite the fact that I didn't honor Him as God or give thanks.

Thanks for this encouraging post bro.
For me when I find myself struggling with #1 or #3, another verse that helps to slash those selfish attitudes to shreds is Matt. 20:28: "...the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."
You know what... that is so true...
we are so unaware of our selfishness sometimes.
Hey... I'm having a hard time finding job/internship. Pray for me.
